New guitar - Gibson SG Standard Silverburst

So Thursday morning I'm having a "work from home" day, when the mailman rings the doorbell to deliver the following just in time for band practice...

That's the Gibson SG Standard Silverburst, part of the "Guitar of the Week" series (week #3) and 1 of 400 (although it's been rumored that fewer than 400 were actually built). Specs are identical to the regular SG Standards with a few minor exceptions: chrome Grover tuners, ebony fretboard (sweet!), and the obvious Silverburst finish, which is stunning in person.

So how does it sound? Um... like a Gibson. :) Seriously, when I had the EDS1275 doubleneck I really liked the sound of the 6-string neck... granted, the EDS1275 had a lot more mass (and as I later found out, didn't have the stock Gibson pickups). So I'm glad that this SG's got tone... a nice crunch in the bridge position (not too brittle), a bit smoother in the neck position (not too dark), cuts nicely for solos yet sits nicely in the mix the rest of the time. I'm finding that I prefer the tone of the SG to the recent Les Paul--the 57 Classic humbuckers seem a bit muddy to me, but the SG's are much more clear. Plus, the guitar's easy to play... no problems getting to the higher frets, the body is rather light and well balanced. Net: looks great, sounds great, feels great... I think it's a keeper.

So with the addition of the SG, I've now got two "Guitars of the Week" (including the Les Paul Classic Antique) and I have another on the way (Firebird V Zebrawood), which should be here sometime next week... of course, there'll be pictures and a full report on that when it arrives.
