My Amps & Effects

last updated: 2012-Jan-7

Over the years I’ve gone through the natural evolution from solid state amps (Crate!) --> way too many effects (Digitech 2101) --> hybrid modeling amps (Johnson JM150). Then I discovered the magic of tubes (thanks to the Mesa Triaxis/2:90 pair), ushering in a whole new era of tube amp purchases alternating between rack gear, collections of tube heads, collections of tube combos, and often all of the above.

Having owned about 70 different tube amps over the past few years, though, I've reached a point where I've become tired of maintaining a small mountain of amps, cabs, mics, and FX gear for the versatility I want in the studio. So in an effort to simply, I recently picked up an Egnater MOD100 head. The Egnater is a "modular" amp that allows up to three dual-channel modules to be installed at a time, creating a 6-channel head with classic tones and modern features (e.g., multiple FX loops, MIDI control, external bias points, etc.). I've currently got 15 modules: BMAN (Fender Bassman-ish), T/D (Fender Twin/Deluxe-ish), VX (Vox AC30-ish), JTM45 (Marshall JTM45-ish), SL (Marshall Plexi-ish), SL2 (Marshall JCM800-ish), EG3/4 (original Egnater TOL100 tone), EG5 (Soldano-ish), MHG (Bogner-ish), E-RECT (Mesa Rectifier-ish), COD (Dumble/Mesa Mark-ish), Randall Blackface (Fender Twin-ish), Randall KH-1 (Kirk Hammett clean tone), Salvation MarkUs (Mesa Mark-ish), and Salvation Stonerverb (Orange-ish). This setup provides a lot of versatility with a minimum amount of investment (and minimum amount of space taken up in the studio). Finally, for those days when I'm looking for good-ol'-fashioned-plug-and-play-tube-amp-simplicity, I've still got an Egnater/Mojo JTM45 that I built at the first Egnater amp building seminar back in October 2006 as well as a late-70's Fender silverface Deluxe Reverb.

Is the DOD VCC1 meant to be used as a "stand alone" volume pedal? Is it worth a crap???

YOU DO have quite an impressive collection of gear & a nice rack, For a guy (haha)

Laterz,
Chris

The DOD VCC1 makes a decent volume pedal... over the years I've alternated between using it as a volume pedal and continuous controller pedal, and it's worked pretty well for both. Seems like they're pretty hard to find these days, though.

Boy. A lot of great stuff. Have you tried the Egnater 2x12 cab with a Mesa Boogie Recto head. I have a Road King II and I would like to get a cab that can be open or closed. Would this work in this situation. Thank you.
